Games can be fun, but they can also be educational and therapeutic .  This week, Genese talks with Dr. Janina Scarlet about how role play games help people face their fears and how Call of Duty and help someone with PTSD.  

Dr. Janina Scarlet is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, a scientist, and a full-time geek. A Ukrainian-born refugee, she survived Chernobyl radiation and persecution. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 with her family and later, inspired by the X-Men, developed Superhero Therapy to help patients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Her book, “Superhero Therapy” released on December 1, 2016 in the U.K. and on August 1, 2017 in the U.S.

Butterscotch Shenanigans

In today's episode, Genese talks with Seth and Sam Coster of Butterscotch Shenanigans. They discuss how game jams led to the inspiration for producing their own games, and how the diagnosis of cancer impacted the development of their award-winning game - Crashlands.

Seth Coster is one of the three co-founders of Saint Louis-based studio Butterscotch Shenanigans, where he is the lead game programmer and one of many game designers. With a background in economics and finance, Seth is also responsible for many of the business aspects of the studio. Since 2010, when Seth began learning to program, he has published over a dozen games, built several dozen jam games, and developed over 200 prototypes.


Sam Coster is one of the three founding brothers of Butterscotch Shenanigans, where he is the creative director, lead artist, and world builder. Always fascinated with people and process, Sam got a degree in psychology, then discarded his diploma for a career in gamedev as the lead artist for Butterscotch. Over just a few years, Sam's art and the team's games have given absurd joy to 5 million players across the world.

Matt Raithel of Graphite Lab

On this week's show, Genese welcomesMatt Raithel of Graphite Lab to discuss 1980s influences on video game development.  Within the past decade, Matt has held a production role in over 50 video games ranging from the iPhone to Wii U, all while helping grow three different game development studios. He currently owns and leads Graphite Lab, a video game development studio which was listed as “One to Watch” by Game Informer Magazine in 2015.
Their latest game, Hive Jump is available now on Steam and is coming soon to Wii U!    As an advocate for the gaming industry, Matt frequently speaks on topics such as gaming violence and game production at major universities throughout his home state. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Art from Missouri State University and is currently on staff at Maryville University as an Instructor of Game Design.

Actor Elias  Toufexis

This week's guest is actor/voice actor Elias Toufexis.  Elias has become an actor with a fan base and cult following around the world. He has played dozens of major characters on television in shows like Lost Girl, Alphas, Stargate Atlantis, Smallville and more. He's played particularly memorable characters on: Supernatural & The Expanse.  In the videogame world, Elias has played the leading characters in many multi-million dollar projects, including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Splinter Cell.  He is also the voice of Adam Jensen in the Deus Ex series.

Genese talks to Leah Hoyer (Vice President of Creative at Telltale Games about gamer-focused storytelling.  Leah also talks about the experience of incorporating The Walking Dead, Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy into their games. 

Leah Hoyer is passionate about making story experiences. She recently joined Telltale Games as their Vice President of Creative. Prior to that, she was head of narrative at both ArenaNet (Guild Wars 2) and Xbox Studios.   She recently launched ThePlayersStory.com to share insights on creating interactive story, and hope that it will become a place where folks who love game narrative can learn and share ideas.
Also, Telltale Games is holding an innovative event this March where people  can learn more about a career in writing or design at Telltale. Attendees will learn from Telltale creatives what it is like to work at the company, and how they make compelling stories for their industry-leading, narrative-driven experiences. Then, folks will have the chance to put those learnings into practice as they create a scene of an interactive story.
